I Brushed My Teeth with Dirt!

The past several years I’ve begun a journey into a greener way of living. One of the obvious places to start was healthy eating. My meals consist of lots of veggies, little meat and a variety of fresh veggies. A not-so-obvious way to “green” my life was to look at the products I was using around my home and on my body. Check out this post about the cleaners I use at home.

I have been more aware of labels and reading ingredient lists. I have tried to simplify my routine so I’m using less product. I have dabbled in oil pulling and using charcoal to whiten teeth. It was just a matter of time before I discovered The Dirt.

the drit toothpaste

This is a powder toothpaste that claims to re-mineralize teeth and make them stronger. For those of you who don’t think you can make the switch from paste to powder they have paste options. I went online and purchased a travel size container-telling myself it was worth a shot. I’m very open minded about trying “green” products.

When I purchased I was worried because there wasn’t a mint flavor. I think the minty fresh breath is one of the best part about brushing your teeth, instead they had sweet orange. I’m all for citrus but I didn’t think it would make my breath taste fresh.

It arrived in a small glass tub, which scored bonus points for me, less plastic! The instructions on the back of the container read:

Open carefully to prevent spills

Wet toothbrush and tap off excess water

Dip in The Dirt and tap off excess powder

Brush gently, this stuff works!

Pretty easy right? I was very nervous and didn’t get enough on the first go round. I’m used to toothpaste lather and definitely had to scoop up more.  I was expecting a chalky or gritty taste from a powder but it was very smooth. I made sure to brush thoroughly. After rinsing my mouth I inspected my teeth, they felt very clean. The Dirt did a good job getting plaque that accumulates along the gum line. I always notice build up there after an evening of mixed drinks. The citrus taste lent the powder an unexpected sweetness that I didn’t mind.

After using up my trial container I kept forgetting to order a new jar. In the meantime I switched back to regular toothpaste and didn’t feel like it got my teeth as clean. I was thrilled when my second jar of Dirt came in. I noticed that my teeth felt cleaner longer. I’m a twice a day brusher, sometimes more depending on what I’ve eaten. The Dirt kept my mouth clean and noticeably diminished the awful taste of morning breath. I didn’t make my fiance do a smell test because I feel like that would have been a bit rude.

I also saw my teeth whiten a tad. Throughout high school and college I whitened with treatments I purchased from my dentist. It worked well, I think judging by taste the main ingredient was hydrogen peroxide, but I haven’t whitened in several years and a recent habit of drinking tea and kombucha were starting to take their toll.

I’m a huge convert and would highly recommend this product to others. I’ve bought both of my tubs on Amazon but you could shop directly on their website (link) They have toothpaste and mouthwash too, if I try those out I’ll make to review them!
